Canada adds 7 new Countries to Student Direct Stream (SDS) list

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada had announced on Friday, July 09, 2021 that it has expanded the Student Direct Stream (SDS) category for International Students to 7 additional countries.


In addition to:

  • China

  • India

  • Morocco

  • Pakistan

  • Philippines

  • Senegal

  • Vietnam

Which were previously the only countries, whose residents can apply for the SDS category, Now the residents of:

  • Brazil

  • Colombia

  • Peru

  • Antigua and Barbuda

  • Costa Rica

  • Trinidad and Tobago

  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Can also apply for under this expedited Study Permit program as long as they meet the conditions.

Under Student Direct Stream Program (SDS), International student generally get their Canadian study permit with 20 calendar days. But in order to be eligible for this program, their are certain pre-requisites which the applicant has to meet in order to be eligible for this program such as:

  • Have an acceptance letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution in Canada

  • Must be living outside of Canada when they apply

  • Have proof that they have paid the tuition for your first year of study

  • Have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAN$10,000

  • If applying for Quebec, then have a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration

  • Have done a medical exam before you apply

  • Get a police clearance certificate before you apply

  • Have the most recent secondary or post-secondary school transcript(s)

  • Have a language test result that shows either:

    • an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic or general training score of 6.0 or higher in each skill (reading, writing, speaking and listening), or

    • a Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) score that is equal to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of at least 7 in each skill (reading, writing, speaking and listening)
